Enjoin Good X Forbid Evil: Principle Description

Al-Amr Bi Al-Ma‘rūf wa Al-Nahy ‘An Al-Munkar" (enjoining good and forbidding evil)

Holy Qur’an

{31:17} O my son! Keep up prayer and enjoin the good and forbid the evil, and bear patiently that which befalls you; surely these acts require courage;

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) extensively emphasized the importance of "al-amr bi al-ma‘rūf wa al-nahy ‘an al-munkar" (enjoining good and forbidding evil), describing it as a fundamental duty for individuals and a pillar for the well-being of the entire Muslim nation. Here are the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (S) regarding this obligation:

The Status of Enjoiners of Good and Forbidders of Evil The Prophet Muhammad (S) honored those who undertake this vital duty:

He stated that those who encourage good and discourage evil are considered the **representatives of Allah and His Messengers on earth**. * He also said that "whoever enjoins good and

prohibits wrong is the **deputy of Allah and the deputy of His Prophet on the earth**."

Core Teachings and the Path to Rectitude The Messenger of Allah (S) provided clear guidance on the essence of this practice: * He used to say: **"O son of Adam, do good and evade evil

Sayings of Imam Ali (Amir al-Mu'mineen) (peace be upon him)

Imam Ali (AS) provided extensive guidance on this obligation:

The Most Excellent Deed: He stated that "Enjoinment of good is the best of all acts performed by creation," and that it is "considered the most excellent deed of people."

  • Foundation of Religion: Imam Ali (AS) affirmed, "The firmness of the religion is due to enjoining what is good and forbidding what is wrong, and observing the limits of ALLAH (swt)."

  • Consequences of Abandonment:  In his last will to Imam al-Hassan and Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon them), he advised: "Never abandon the enjoinment of good and the prohibition of wrong lest the evil ones amongst you gain mastery over you. And then (in that case) when you pray, your invocations will not be granted to you." He also warned that if people abandon this duty, "the evil people among them will take charge over them and when they supplicate, they will not be answered."

  • Superiority over Other Deeds: Imam Ali (AS) highlighted its immense value, saying, "All acts of righteousness and striving in the way of Allah are as mere spittle in the deep sea compared to enjoining good and prohibiting wrong."
  • Condemnation of Hypocrisy: He cautioned against inconsistency in practice: "Allah curses those who enjoin good but abandon its practice, and those who prohibit wrong but commit it themselves."

_______________

6. If one of you sees an evil being committed and is unable to forbid it with his hand or tongue and forbids it with his heart, while Allah knows the truth of his intention, then [it is as if] he has forbidden it.
